After playing with the curves, I added a few layers with white gradient circles on screen blend to bring the shadows up even more.  I used the gradient circles in the upper left, and the two bottom corners.  Instead of adjusting the curves more, I wanted to keep a sense of depth in the tonal range, so the center shadows are a little darker.  Adjusting the curves for the whole image seemed to flatten it a bit.
